Goalkeepers Nico Campuzano and Evan Munn join Sounders U23

soundersu23SUMNER, Wash. (April 24, 2019) — Filling out the goalkeeping corps for the Seattle Sounders U23s in 2019 will be Nico Campuzano and Evan Munn, who both play collegiately in Oregon. They, along with returner Akili Kasim, will be battling to wear the gloves for the Rave Green this summer.

“We will have a strong group of goalkeepers this summer, and we expect competition for playing time to be fierce among the three of them,” Sounders U23 head coach Jason Prenovost said.

Munn only played once in the league for the U23s in 2018 and twice in 2017 in a season shortened by injury. The Oregon State goalkeeper played two seasons at Tacoma Community College in 2015 and 2016, where he was team captain and most valuable player as a freshman and the NWAC Tournament MVP and TCC Man of the Year as a sophomore.

Spanish native Campuzano played two games in his first college season in 2018, joining University of Portland after playing at UD Las Palmas, FC Barcelona, Real Valladolid and Real Santander in his homeland. As the most senior member of the Pilots’ goalkeeping platoon, he will expect to play a bigger role for his school in 2019—and potentially for the U23s as well.

All player signings are pending league and federation approval.

The Sounders U23 team has played in USL League Two for the past seven seasons and has helped over 60 players move on to professional contracts. The U23s are the amateur affiliate of 2016 MLS Cup champion Seattle Sounders FC and Tacoma Defiance. The 2019 Sounders U23 season kicks off with a weekend doubleheader on May 17 and 19 against the defending national champion Calgary Foothills FC and Lane United, respectively.
