TACOMA, WA— (club release) Tacoma Defiance (4-13-5, 17 points) on Friday defeated Orange County SC (6-8-9, 27 points) by a 2-1 margin for its second win in its last three games. Shandon Hopeau and Marlon Vargas each scored for Tacoma, which improved to 4-5-2 at Cheney Stadium this season.
Hopeau’s goal evened the match at 1-1 just before halftime. He took a pass from Josh Atencio near the top of the area and slotted it past the Orange County goalkeeper with his right foot for his third marker of the season. Hopeau now ranks second on the team in goals with three, trailing only Justin Dhillon’s seven. The assist was the first in the professional career of Atencio, who wore the captain’s armband for Tacoma.
Seven minutes after the halftime break, Vargas found a loose ball in front of the net and finished to give the home side a 2-1 advantage. Danny Robles sent a corner kick into the area that hit the head of an Orange County defender and landed at the foot of Vargas, who netted his first professional marker.
Six players under the age of 20 saw action for Tacoma tonight, including one First Team player in Alfonso Ocampo-Chavez.
