Rider University trio to join Sounders U23 for 2019 season

soundersu23SUMNER, Wash. (April 10, 2019) — The Seattle Sounders U23s continue to draw talent from top NCAA Division I programs across the country, including signing three players onto their 2019 roster from Rider University. In 2018, Rider won its third MAAC championship in four years and played in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in school history.

“Rider has been a great partner for us in identifying players in the recent years,” Sounders U23 head coach Jason Prenovost said. “Charlie Inverso has worked hard to develop a top program at the school, and we’re glad to give his players a platform to continue their development in the summer months.”

Leading goalscorer Pablo DeCastro, who scored the game-winning goal in the MAAC tournament final and an equalizer against Akron in the NCAA Tournament first round as part of his nine-goal, one-assist season, joins the Sounders U23s this summer. The redshirt sophomore from Madrid, Spain, has scored 17 goals in two college seasons.

Moving from the front line to the back, defender Arthur Herpreck of Brest, France, will also be joining the Sounders U23s. The redshirt junior has been on the All-MAAC Second Team in each of his three seasons playing for the Broncs, starting all 19 games for a team in 2018 that compiled six clean sheets and only conceded more than one goal in three games for a 0.99 goals-against average.

Fellow Frenchman Emmanuel Kouma, a redshirt junior from Paris, rounds out the Rider signings for the U23s. Kouma started all but one match in 2018 for Rider and played nearly every minute of the season, making the All-MAAC First Team and the United Soccer Coaches All-Northeast Region Third Team as a fullback.

All player signings are pending league and federation approval.

The Sounders U23 team has played in USL League Two for the past seven seasons and has helped over 60 players move on to professional contracts. The U23s are the amateur affiliate of 2016 MLS Cup champion Seattle Sounders FC and Tacoma Defiance. The 2019 Sounders U23 season kicks off with a weekend doubleheader on May 17 and 19 against the defending national champion Calgary Foothills FC and Lane United, respectively.
