Friends of Sergio “Pino” Martinez are once again rallying around him as cancer he bravely fought off has returned. The “Pino Cup” is this Saturday, August the 12th at 5 PM at Shoreline College to raise funds and awareness for the former soccer player and Shoreline assistant coach. Sergio was a two time all-conference selection while at Trinity Lutheran and finished as the college’s all-time leading scorer. He began coaching with at Mountlake Terrace High School and Shoreline College before being diagnosed with A L L Leukemia in September of 2015. He was hospitalized off and on for the better part of a year before going into remission last summer.
During a routine spinal check this past May, they found that the cancer had returned in a rather aggressive fashion and that Pino would need a bone marrow transplant in order to survive. His friend and mentor coach George Dremousis says of that time, “Sergio had been playing with OSA Seattle and we held a charity match a year and half ago to help offset his growing medical costs. Although he was working as an accountant and had insurance, the co-pays alone were enormous and our first event was very successful.”
This time Dremousis describes “Pino Cup 2” as having a dual purpose. “Our event this week is more about raising awareness about blood cancers and bone marrow donations. Be The Match, an organization that works very closely with the Sounders, will be on hand with a tent to hand out information and hopefully get more people, especially in the Hispanic community, to sign up. Right now, Sergio (Pino) does not have a great match and he’s due to begin his transplant on August 24th.”
Dremousis and the Shoreline soccer community are battling with Sergio all the way. “Pino is a great young man, an outstanding young coach and was a tremendous player for us at Trinity. He is highly regarded in the Hispanic and soccer communities,” Says George.
