TUKWILA, WA—The Washington Timbers edged the Seattle Stars 2-1 at Starfire Sports Stadium on Sunday July 30 to claim the 2017 Northwest Premier League Championship.
The emotional day included a pre-match farewell to Seattle player Haylei Hughes who died earlier in the week in a fall at Wallace Falls. The match had only just begun when the Timbers took the lead. Brenna Bogle powered a shot into the Seattle goal in the 7th minute.
The goal stood until the 58th minute when Cara Maher answered for Seattle. The Stars had been pressuring after the second half kick off and they got level when Maher blasted one in from the top of the penalty arc.
The match was back and forth the rest of the way with the Timbers finding their winner in the 75th minute from Jesse Ray. A Timbers counter attack resulted in a ball that fell to Ray who made no mistake by blasting home the winner.
There were chances for both sides the rest of the way. Seattle hit the corner of the post / cross bar and the Timbers had a late goal called back for being offside. An injury meant plenty of added time but WTFC did a nice job of keeping the Stars pinned back in their own half.
