SUMNER, WA— (U23 release) The Sounders U23 team got back to their winning ways with a 3-2 victory over the TSS Rovers on Saturday, July 1st at Sunset Stadium in Sumner. The win came after tough road losses in Portland and in Calgary to set the team back on the 2017 campaign. Goals have been hard to come by as of late but tonight reopened the attack with a home win.
The game started with a flurry of shots on the TSS Rovers goal and without the stellar work of TSS goalkeeper Andrew Hicks, the game could have seen many Sounders U23 goals in the opening minutes. In the 10th minute, the Sounders U23 finally found the back of the net after a shot by Sergio Rivas bounced back after another Hicks save and was buried by Miguel Berry to make it 1-0 Sounders U23. Almost immediately, Derek Johnson got behind the defense again crossing to Yoshi Chaffin who only missed due to more heroics from Hicks.
The Sounders U23 took 16 corner kicks on the night and in the 39th minute, Jalen Crisler hammered home a near post header from Adam Jones corner kick. The game was now 2-0 but on the ensuing kickoff, the Sounders U23 gave away a ball in the middle with a counter attack from TSS that resulted in a goal that sent the teams into half time at 2-1 Sounders U23.
As the second half began, the Sounders U23 team began hammering the TSS goal again with opportunities being denied by Hicks and his defensive line. In the 58th minute, during a free kick for TSS, a skirmish occurred in the wall with a TSS player apparently kicking a Sounders U23 defender and the teams came together. The result was a second yellow to Andre Baires and TSS was now down to 10 men.
Eddie Na broke behind the TSS defense in the 68th minute and was taken down in the penalty box. Sergio Rivas calmly slotted home the penalty kick to make it 3-1 Sounders U23. TSS found a goal of their own from Conner Hildebrant late in the game but the game would end 3-2 in favor of the Sounders U23.
At 5-5-1 the Sounders U23 hold the 3rd position in the table of the PDL NW Division. There are many scenarios where the Sounders U23 can still make playoffs but they will need help. The Sounders U23 sit three points back from the Portland Timbers U23 with Portland having a game in hand. Portland plays the Victoria Highlanders on Sunday, July 2nd with playoff implications at hand. Stay tuned for the final push in the coming weeks.
The Sounders U23 return to Sunset Stadium on Friday, July 7th to play Victoria. The game serves as a double header with the Sounders Women who are also chasing a playoff spot. Game times are 5pm for the Sounders Women versus OSA, and 8pm for the Sounders U23 versus Victoria. A ticket purchased to either game gets you into both games!
