No flag to salute? Teams turn to goalkeeper’s America-themed gloves

NWPL Primary CrestBREMERTON, WA— Sometimes it’s the little things that become big memories at a soccer match. On Saturday afternoon in Bremerton the Olympic Force hosted Twin City Union in a Northwest Premier League soccer match at Gordon Field.

Everyone was in place and standing as the National Anthem was ready to play. One big problem – Oh say can you see? There was no American flag to be seen. Apparently Kitsap County Parks had taken down the one that usually stays flying on the edge of the Fairgrounds.

Quick thinking by Twin City Union goalkeeper Emily Sorenson (North Thurston High School / Centralia College) saved the moment and gave us that “little thing” that will last in the memory. She realized she was wearing stars and stripes on her West Coast “Quanton Freedom” gloves – that feature an American flag motif. She went to the center circle and raised her hands high.

The tweeted photo below captures the moment.

Right on cue, the referees, both teams and the fans in the stands faced Sorenson’s gloves as the music played through.

It’s only fitting then that Sorenson went on to use those gloves to record a 3-0 shut out of the Force.
