Washington Spirit visit Seattle Reign FC Saturday afternoon

reignfc-croppedSEATTLE, WA — (club release) This Saturday, Seattle Reign FC return home to Memorial Stadium for Family Day when they face the Washington Spirit. It is the first of two matches between the two teams this season, and the only one in Seattle.

Kickoff is set for 1:00pm PT. Fans in the U.S. can watch the match on through the go90 app or go90.com, or on nwslsoccer.com for those outside the U.S. They can also follow live play-by-play of the match at Reign FC’s official Twitter page, @ReignFC, and can join the conversation using the hashtag #SEAvWAS.

Reign FC’s (1-1-2, 5 points) previous match was a 2-2 tie against rivals Portland Thorns FC. It was the only match between the two teams at Providence Park this season. Reign FC’s road record against the Thorns is now 2-4-2.

“We were by far the more dominant team in the first half and they came at us in the second half,” said Seattle Reign FC head coach and general manager Laura Harvey. “After the Boston result and performance we wanted to show that that’s not who we want to be. It doesn’t mean anything if we don’t come this weekend against Washington and don’t show up. That’s our challenge, we have to match the effort level and the desire that we had in Portland.”

After a two-game road trip which saw the club post a 0-1-1 record, Reign FC now heads back home for two matches. Going back to last season, Reign FC is undefeated in their last eight matches at Memorial Stadium. Seattle has an all-time home record of 4-1-1 against Washington.

WashingtonSpirit2“We love being here,” said Harvey. “Having games here in front of our home fans is something we are always comfortable with, and I think we’re hard to beat here. That’s something that every team knows when they come here, is that they’re going to have to earn it.”

The Reign FC offense currently leads the league in goals scored with eight through four matches. Seattle has scored 18 regular season goals all-time against the Washington Spirit, having only been shutout in two of their 11 regular season meetings. The club’s leading goal-scorer against the Spirit is co-captain Jessica Fishlock, who has found the back of the net four times.

“I like to try and get close to goal because I know I’ve got the level within me to score goals,” said Fishlock. “I do often score against the Spirit, so we’ll see if this weekend I can notch another one.”

Washington is coming off a 4-3 victory against Sky Blue FC, in the highest scoring match of the NWSL season to-date. Forward Francisca Ordega scored two goals and tallied an assist in the match, earning NWSL Player of the Week honors for her performance.

“We need to make sure we know who their threats are, they’ve been very different in each game they’ve played,” said Harvey. “Jim’s [Gabarra] teams are always really hard to play against. They always have a mentality to be hard to beat and I think they’ve showed that even though they maybe haven’t gotten the results they wanted.”
