Kitsap Soccer Club announces signings of Seattle U’s Harris, Western Alabama’s Macias

kitsap_soccer_club_logo2_smallBREMERTON, WA—(club release) Kitsap Soccer Club announced the signings of center back Joe Harris and center midfielder Alvaro Macias for the 2017 National Premier Soccer League season.

Harris, a 23-year-old native of Raumati, New Zealand, is coming off his senior season at Seattle University in 2016, when he made eight appearances at midfield and scored in the Redhawks’ season-opening 2-0 victory over West Virginia. He has played three seasons for Seattle U.

Prior to coming to Seattle University, Harris played two seasons (including a redshirt) for New Mexico, and made an appearance for the 2013 Lobos squad that went to the NCAA semifinals. Before coming to the United States, Harris played for Kapiti College in Wellington, New Zealand, where he was the player of the year in 2011.

He was also the Wellington United Young Player of the Year in 2011.

“Joe was recommended to us by Pete Fewing, who coached Kitsap for a couple years and moved on to coach at Seattle University,” Kitsap associate head coach Liviu Bird said. “We invited Joe to our invitational tryout and played him at center back, which isn’t a position he’s always played, but he showed great adaptability and a positive attitude about the idea.”

Macias, a 21-year-old native of Cadiz, Spain, just finished his junior season at the University of Western Alabama. He made 12 appearances for the Tigers with two starts. He scored his lone goal of the season on a free kick in a 5-0 victory over Delta State.

“Alvaro is a player who might have flown under the radar because he played at the Division II level, but he has the skills to play professionally,” Bird said. “His distribution and awareness are excellent, and he’s a technical central midfielder who grew up in a country where they prioritize the kind of skill that we still sometimes lack in the U.S.”

Kitsap SC is making its debut season in the NPSL in 2017 and will open the season on May 20, hosting Spokane Shadow FC at Gordon Field in Bremerton. Kitsap SC hosts Harbor SC in a friendly on May 13.
