Reigning MLS Cup champion Sounders FC and its USL affiliate, S2, team up with PDL partner, Sounders U23, more than ever in 2017 to help aspiring professional players work their way up the development ladder. On May 28, the clubs are set to play a doubleheader at Starfire Stadium, as S2 battles Sacramento Republic FC at 2:00 p.m. PT, followed by Sounders U23 taking on TSS Academy.
“The Pacific Northwest is full of young talent, and it is mutually beneficial for our club to continue to build its relationship with Sounders U23,” Sounders FC Director of Player Personnel Kurt Schmid said. “Not only do these players have an opportunity to play in a competitive environment, but it allows our staff to get a closer look at their development.”
The invigorated partnership gives more players in the Sounders development pyramid an opportunity to shine and work their way up. Many current and former Sounders FC players have shared the amateur field for Sounders U23, including DeAndre Yedlin, Jordan Morris, Aaron Kovar and Sean Okoli. S2, now in its third season in USL, looks to continue to give young professional players an opportunity to compete in a professional environment in their quest to reach the First Team.
“We are always looking at ways to help develop players and the MLS partnership with Sounders FC is great for these young players,” said Sounders U23 co-owner Cliff McElroy. “Having the opportunity to train with and play alongside the professionals allows them access to what it takes at the next level.”
The May 28 doubleheader begins at 2:00 p.m. PT for the USL showdown between S2 and Sacramento Republic. The Sounders U23 and TSS Academy fixture follows at 5:00 p.m. PT, with both matches set to be held at Starfire Stadium.
