ORANGE BEACH, AL ––(NUEagles.com) Northwest University’s (Kirkland, WA) goalkeeper Lauren Hellum came up with two big saves in a double overtime shootout as the Eagles defeated Ottawa University (Kans.) in the second round of the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championships this afternoon in Orange Beach, Alabama.
Northwest University’s defense held a high powered Ottawa offense that had scored 78 goals this season scoreless for four periods. Hellum came up with 8 saves as the NU defense turned away 21 Braves’ shots. In the shootout, it would be Tatyana Reveles, Sharaya Roberts, Brianna Sillivan and Winter Wirkkala putting their shots past the Ottawa keeper for the victory. Hellum came up with the two stops to clinch it for NU. The Eagles held the Braves leading scorer, Caroline Jenkins (30 goals and 18 assists) scoreless in 11 shot attempts today, 8 shots on goal.
NU advances to the field of eight and will play Reinhardt (Ga.), a 3-2 winner over Keiser (Fla.) tonight at 4 p.m. (EST) on Wednesday.
Said NU coach, Bryan Chud after the game, “We played a gutsy match tonight with a lot of heart and showed that we deserve to be here on the national stage. The girls gave everything they had for the full 110 mins, and everyone played a part. When the game went to penalties I knew we had a great chance as Lauren has been solid for us in goal on penalties, and we have very good penalty takers as well. We have practiced pks all season for this very scenario, and the girls were more than ready. Winter Wirkkala, Tatyana Reveles, Sharaya Roberts, and Brianna Sillivan have routinely scored their PK’s in practice, so it was no surprise how confidently they dispatched their kicks. I am extremely proud of the ladies tonight, and now we regroup for another huge match in the elite eight tomorrow!”
