Huskies enter NCAA Tournament for 23rd time in program history

washington_huskiesSEATTLE, WA—(GoHuskies.com) The University of Washington Men’s Soccer team received the No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament during the bracket announcement Monday morning. The selection marks the team’s 23rdappearance in the tournament, the last time being in 2014.

“I’m excited for this team to be back in the NCAA tournament,” said head coach Jamie Clark. “Last year’s hiatus made us hungrier and our great regular-season earned us a high seed in the tournament.”

The 48-team field consists of 16 seeded programs. The top 16 squads receive byes, therefore not playing in the first round. Washington (13-6-0) will face the winner of first round matchup between the University of Portland (12-5-1) and New Mexico (12-6-2) at Husky Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 5 p.m.

“We will have an extremely difficult second round game,” said Clark. “Portland and New Mexico are undoubtedly the two hottest teams on the West Coast right now. Their matchup should be a great one, so we will wait and see who wins out, and be ready for a tough matchup come Sunday.”

In the Huskies’ field are also San Diego State (9-4-5) and UNLV (10-11-1). The winner of that match will face six seeded Denver (17-0-3) on Sunday.

The Huskies are 12-22 all-time in the in the NCAA Tournament. At home the squad has a favorable 8-6 record. Their most appearance was in 2014 where they hosted Furman in the second round, advancing on penalty kicks. Their journey to the championship was put to an end when they fell to Michigan State in the third round. The teams went to penalty kicks and Michigane State came out on top, 4-3.

In 2013, the squad made it all the way to the quarterfinals where they lost to New Mexico 0-1. The Dawgs have a chance at redemption if the Lobos beat the Pilots in their first round matchup this Thursday.

Washington finished its regular season 13-6-0 overall and 7-4-0. In the most recent polls the Huskies are ranked No. 14 in the NSCAA Coaches’ Poll and No. 5 in the RPI.

The Pac-12 has four teams participating in the tournament- Washington, Stanford, UCLA and SDSU. Stanford and Washington are the only two seeded Pac-12 teams.
