BELLINGHAM, WA ––(WWU release) The undefeated Western Washington University women’s soccer team is the new No. 1 team in the nation in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II national poll released Tuesday.
The Vikings are undefeated at 11-0-1 overall and sits atop the league standings at 6-0-0 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. WWU has a current 10-game winning streak and recently tied a GNAC record with its 22nd consecutive home victory at Harrington Field. Western’s dominating season so far features victories over No. 6 UC San Diego (currently ranked #9) and No. 10 Bridgeport (currently ranked #17), and a tie against No. 24 Sonoma State (currently ranked #19).
Western opened the season No. 3 in the NSCAA preseason poll, after finishing the 2015 season No. 3 with its second national semifinal appearance in the last three seasons. Since the start of the 2012 season, WWU has made four appearances in the NCAA II Tournament and combined for a 87-9-7 record (.879).
This season the undefeated Vikings are amongst the NCAA statistical leaders in several categories, including shutouts (T5th – 9) and goals against average (6th – 0.326). While the defense is amongst the toughest in the nation, WWU’s offense leads the GNAC in every offensive category and is 13th nationally with 7.50 points per game and 2.58 goals per game.
WWU will now face a heavy road schedule in its six remaining regular-season games, with five matches away from Bellingham. The Vikings make their annual Oregon road trip this week facing Western Oregon on Thursday (3 pm) and Concordia on Saturday (6 pm).
