Alex Roldan wins it for Seattle U in overtime

SEATTLE,WA – (SU release) Alex Roldan played hero Friday night at Championship Field in front of a boisterous crowd excited to see the Redhawks in action after a five-game road stint to open the season.

Earning a free kick outside the top right of the 18-yard box, the junior midfielder whipped a shot around the right side of the College of Charleston wall and into the nearest netting, giving Seattle University men’s soccer a thrilling 2-1 come-from-behind, overtime victory over the Cougars.

The win puts the Redhawks at an even 3-3-0 on the season while CofC drops to 2-2-1 overall.

SU dominated play from the opening kick, earning a 10-2 shot advantage in the first half. But the Redhawks could not pull ahead early. Their best chance of the half came at the 30:39 mark when Sergio Rivas hit the post on an attempt off a cross from Roldan.

The Redhawks continued to remain in the Cougars’ end for much of the second half, but continued to battle CofC’s defense, which bunkered down well, not allowing space for SU to work.

The visitors would ultimately strike first, getting on the board in the 83rd minute on an SU own goal. CofC’s Nico Rittmeyer sent a ball into the box from the right flank that deflected off an SU defender and into the net.

The Redhawks would respond on the ensuing possession as Ozzie Ramos picked up on a loose ball inside the six and tapped it past CofC goalkeeper Kevin Shields for the equalizer.

“I thought we had a terrific response to College of Charleston’s goal and we got a terrific goal from Alex,” said SU Head Coach Pete Fewing. “I was pleased with how hard he struck the ball. This was a good win for us.”

Just inside four minutes gone in the first 10-minute extra period, the Redhawks drew a foul just outside the 18-yard box. Roldan took the point on the free kick and would drill into nearpost around the Cougars’ wall at 93:45.

The Redhawks return to Championship Field on Sunday, hosting Davidson at 3 p.m. in the second game of an SU soccer doubleheader. the SU women host Gonzaga at noon.
