Shadow WFT vs South Sound Shock – 4:00

NWPL Primary CrestEven though they know the trophy awaits them following 90 minutes of action, plenty of the players on the squad are anxious to take the field once again against South Sound after the surprising defeat earlier this season in which the Shadow fell 2-1 on the road. The team is looking to make up for the disappointment felt at the final whistle in a game in which they had the better of play against a fresh Shock squad that had not played the day before as they had done in a 9-2 win at Olympic, but came up short courtesy of a penalty and nice long-distance effort by the hosts.

For Spokane, the loss was the only blemish in a season in which they won by a margin of two goals and scored at least three times in every other contest, posting five shutouts as well in the process, which ranks tied with Yakima for the second most in the league behind South Sound’s six. The team has won seven consecutive by an aggregate score of 41-4 to move to 10-1-0 going into the final game, boasting the top offense (by a 42-goal margin over Yakima’s 23) and the league’s second best defense (trailing South Sound by 3 goals at 10 allowed).

The 2016 NWPL Trophy

Megan Lindsay (16), Sarah Cox (13) and Tiara Pittman-Thomas (9) are the top three goal scorers in the league going into the finale.

After the loss to South Sound it looked like the final game of the season was going to decide everything as the Shock also went on a run with a 4-0-1 mark in their next five games, but a series of draws in their last three games knocked them out of contention as Spokane continued to post victories.

Shadow MFT vs South Sound Shock – 6:30

EPLWA Logo-07-600The two-time champions will have to settle for a top three finish in the third season of the Evergreen Premier League. The Men, 8-4-1, sit tied for second currently on points; however, Bellingham holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Shadow. The Hammers play Sunday.

Several players are among the league-leaders going into the final game of the season. After playing much of the season in the back line and scoring a handful of goals, Fernando Alvarez recently shifted to an attacking role and scored four last week on the road in a pair of wins. His 10 goals makes him just the fourth player in league history to hit double-digits in scoring and ranks as the fifth-best single season scoring tally, an impressive feat considering more than half were scored from while playing on the back line. He is currently second in the league in scoring behind all-time EPLWA leader Tyler Bjork, who has 12.

Tyler Bjork (Bellingham 2014) 13

Eleazar Galvan (Wenatchee 2015) 11

Meanwhile, the shutout at Wenatchee last Sunday was the team’s fifth of the campaign, which leads the league (Vancouver has four), and the fourth for Tony Watters, who also leads the league in shutouts for the season.

Though Yakima has been the team’s historical nemesis, South Sound has been the Shadow’s competitive rival in EPLWA. The Shock finished second to the Shadow the past two seasons, but are locked into fourth at 6-6-1 heading into the final game Saturday having gone 2-2-1 in their last five games. The Shadow are unbeaten against South Sound at 3-0-2, posting a dramatic rally for a 3-2 victory on the road earlier this season in which they scored an equalizer in the 90th minute and winner in stoppage time to stun the hosts.
