Sounders U23 to play Calgary twice in race for playoffs

su23clearTUKWILA, WA — (Sounders U23 release) The Sounders U23 team traveled to Victoria, British Columbia over July 3rd to play the Victoria Highlanders who are still in contention for a playoff spot. In the 40th minute of play, after a barrage of shots on the Victoria goal, central defender Tom Teupen made a run up the middle of the field playing a give and go with Andrew Wheeler-Ominu then smashing home what would be the game winner. This was Teupen’s first goal for Sounders U23. Jeff Caldwell registered the clean sheet in goal for Sounders U23.

The game was played at the beautiful Centennial Stadium pitch at the University of Victoria. There was a slight delay as the officiating crew had to be located but the game started roughly 20 minutes behind the scheduled start time, but in plenty of time for the Sounders U23 team to make the ferry ride home after the victory. With the win, the Sounders U23 are in sole possession of first place in the PDL Northwest Division at 24 points with Calgary close behind at 21 points and a game in hand.

Calgary will play the Sounders U23 on Sunday, July 10th in Calgary before traveling down to finish the regular season with two games next weekend against the Kitsap Pumas and the Sounders U23. With Washington Crossfire, Victoria Highlanders, and Lane United sitting on 13 points apiece, these teams will need to win their remaining games and need help to catch a playoff spot. Lane United sits in the best position with four games remaining. The top two teams in the division are guaranteed a postseason appearance with the potential of a third team if either Calgary or the Sounders U23 team can muster the points to finish with the most points in the three divisions of the Western Conference.

When Calgary comes to town to play the Sounders U23 on July 15th, it will mark the final regular season game for the men in rave green. The game will be played at 7:30pm at Sunset Stadium with a Pre-Match Clinic happening before the match. All youth players are invited to attend the Pre-Match Clinic with registration found at: .

Sounders U23/Sounders Women

The Sounders U23 and Sounders Women teams are owned and operated by owners Lane Smith, Cliff McElroy, and Mike Jennings.

The Sounders U23 play in the Northwest Division of the Premier Development League (PDL) and the Sounders Women play in the WPSL. Featuring current college age amateur players with former international and professional stars, both the PDL and the WPSL provide elite amateurs the opportunity to compete while maintaining their eligibility as college student-athletes. Both the PDL and the WPSL are recognized throughout the world for providing superior competition for players, while offering affordable family entertainment for fans throughout North America. The Sounders U23 team is the direct PDL affiliate to the Sounders FC first team and USL S2 team.
