SEATTLE, WA–– (Reign release) The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) today announced Seattle Reign FC forward Nahomi “Naho” Kawasumi is the NWSL Player of the Week for Week 11.
Naho scored two goals in her return to Reign FC as Seattle extended its unbeaten streak to five games in a 2-0 win against the Boston Breakers on Saturday, July 2 at Memorial Stadium. Naho’s brace helped Reign FC to its first win since June 12.
The forward opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Naho slotted in Manon Melis on an overlapping run, who was able to control the ball and send a cross into the box. The ball deflected off a Boston defender, falling right to the feet of Naho who slotted the ball home.
Naho’s goal marked the first time since May that Reign FC had netted a first-half goal.
In the 62nd minute, Naho extended the lead with a strike from just inside the penalty box. Keelin Winters sent a long ball forward, finding a sprinting Naho behind the Boston defense. As Naho cut inside, Elli Reed made an overlapping run to pull Boston defender Kassey Kallman away from goal, creating enough space for Naho to notch a beautiful goal past the outstretched hands of Jami Kranich.
This marks the 12th time a member of Seattle Reign FC has been named Player of the Week. Naho earned Player of the Week honors twice during her 2014 stint with the club.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of media members that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
Reign FC (4-3-4, 16 pts) head to Rochester to play the Western New York Flash (7-4-0 24 pts) on Saturday, July 9 at 4:00 p.m. PT.
