Sounders U23, Sounders Women win league openers

PDL Primary ShieldSUMNER, WA— (club release) The Sounders U-23 defeated the Crossfire PDL in their opening game of the 2016 Premier Development League regular season. The Sounders U-23 earned 3 points against the division rival Crossfire thanks to goals from forward David Olsen and midfielder Jacob Granlund.

In the eleventh minute, Sam Langston dribbled down left sideline and crossed the ball to the near 6-yard box. Running between defenders, Olsen flicked it over the Crossfire goalkeeper, Bryce Logan, and into the net securing the early 1-0 lead for the Sounders U-23.

The Crossfire had their best opportunity to equalize late in the second half as the Sounders defenders tried to clear a corner kick. The ball found its way to Nathan Aune right in front of the goal. He tried to bury it home from 6 yards away but couldn’t find the back of the net as he skied it over the goal.

In the 85th minute, Olsen was at it again as he ran up the field on a counter attack with Granlund on his left. With one defender to beat, Olsen dribbled it to the very last second where the defender had to commit, leaving Jacob Granlund open in the box. Olsen slid the pass through to Granlund, who then slotted his shot to the back of the net putting the Sounders U-23 ahead for good 2-0.

The Sounders U-23 will take their three points on the road to face the Kitsap Pumas on Saturday, May 28th. The Sounders U-23 were defeated by the Pumas in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup last Wednesday on a 90th minute goal.
