VIDEO BUZZ: Highly-ranked Whitworth Pirates featured in new clip

SPOKANE, WA— The Whitworth Pirates have been ranked in the national top ten for much of their 2015 season. Sure, they were upset by the Pacific Lutheran Lutes in Parkland last weekend, but they did bounce back the next match in Tacoma to top the Puget Sound Loggers, 1-0 (see recap below.)

It was at an earlier Pirates-Loggers match in Spokane that Alec Moore, whose YouTube Channel is filled with wedding videos, took his camera to capture the VIDEO BUZZ feature above. Alec filmed Whitworth’s 2-0 win over UPS and captured some of the spirit of Pirates soccer along the way.

PIRATES BOUNCE BACK IN TACOMA

TACOMA, WA— (WhitworthPirates.com) Sam Engle scored the lone goal just after halftime as visiting Whitworth bounced back following its first loss of the season to earn a 1-0 victory against Puget Sound on Sunday afternoon in western Washington.

No. 4 Whitworth (13-1-1, 9-1-1 Northwest Conference) completed a season sweep of Puget Sound (9-6-1, 7-3-1) following a 2-0 win at Whitworth earlier in the season. After falling 2-0 to Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, the Pirates earned a key win in the hunt for the NWC title. By defeating the third-place Loggers, the Pirates stayed one point ahead of second-place Pacific Lutheran in the standings.

Engle scored the match-winning goal during the 50th minute with assists from Alfredo Ornelas and Jonah Snyder. A series of passes sent the ball to the top of the 18-yard box and then to Engle on the left side of the field. Engle’s shot deflected off a defender and into the net for his seventh goal of the season.

Whitworth set the tone in the first half with five shots on goal and eight corner kicks while holding the Loggers to no shots on goal and just one shot.

For the match, the Pirates totaled 14 shots (eight on goal) and held Puget Sound to six shots and only one shot on goal. Whitworth also held an 11-5 edge in corner kick chances.

Whitworth goalkeeper Timmy Costa made one save, earning his ninth shutout of the season. Puget Sound netminder Daniel Kirsch made eight saves.

The Pirates will play their final regular season home contests next weekend, facing Linfield and Willamette. Whitworth will battle Linfield on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1:30 p.m. before hosting Willamette for Senior Day on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
